Musing on Frozen Treats

A chilly air may have replaced the stretch of warm weather that recently swept through New York, but it didn't temper my cravings for yogurt and ice cream.

I went to the Red Mango shop on Court Street on April 29 to pick up a free small cup of frozen pomegranate yogurt topped with raspberries. I learned about the promotion -- which expires on May 8 -- from browsing through Metro ... and since I've never had their product before, this seemed like a good time to take advantage of the company's generosity. (I saved $5.36¢ in the process.)

Not content with just one culinary treat, I walked over to Baskin-Robbins on Smith Street for its 31¢ "Scoop Night". Since I believe in getting the most bang for my buck -- or, in this case, $1.01¢ -- I bought Pralines 'n Cream (vanilla ice cream with caramel ribbon and pecan pieces), Rocky Road (chocolate ice cream with almonds and marshmallows), and rainbow sherbet (a combination of orange, pineapple, and raspberry sherbets).

This one-day event was held to honor the National Volunteer Fire Council with a $100,000 donation to its Junior Firefighter Program and raise funds for local fire service departments. The dollar may have declined in value thanks to the global recession, but one can't put a price on a worthwhile cause -- whether it's saving lives or indulging in a sugar rush.
